Show the calculation steps
- Each year: balance = (previous balance + deposit) × (1 + 7.1%), assuming the deposit is made before the 5th of April so it earns interest for the full year.
- Repeat for 15 years: ₹40,68,209.22.
- Total deposited = ₹1,50,000.00 × 15 = ₹22,50,000.00; interest = ₹18,18,209.22.
- The PPF rate is set by the government and reviewed every quarter; enter the current rate. The yearly deposit limit and rules can change.
How PPF works
PPF accounts have a 15-year tenure that can be extended in blocks of five years. The government sets the interest rate, which is credited yearly, and a yearly deposit limit applies. Depositing before the 5th of a month ensures that deposit earns interest for that month.
Tax treatment
Under the old tax regime, deposits qualify for a deduction under Section 80C up to the limit, and interest and maturity proceeds are exempt from tax under current rules. Check the latest rules before relying on this.
Formula
Balance at the end of year k = (Balance at the end of year k − 1 + Yearly deposit) × (1 + r)
Where:
- r
- = Annual PPF interest rate as a decimal
- Yearly deposit
- = Amount deposited each year (up to the annual limit)
