Show the calculation steps
- Basic = 40% of CTC = ₹4,80,000; HRA = 50% of basic = ₹2,40,000.
- Employer PF = 12% of basic = ₹57,600; gratuity provision = 4.81% of basic = ₹23,088. These are part of the CTC but are not paid in hand.
- Special allowance = CTC − basic − HRA − employer PF − gratuity − variable = ₹3,99,312.
- Gross salary = ₹11,19,312. Employee PF = ₹57,600, professional tax = ₹2,400.
- Income tax (new regime, FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27)) on taxable income ₹10,44,312 = ₹0.
- Take-home = gross − PF − professional tax − income tax = ₹10,59,312 a year.
- Employers structure salaries differently, so use your offer letter for exact figures. HRA exemption is not applied under the old regime here because it needs your rent details. Variable pay is spread evenly over 12 months.
What is in a CTC
CTC includes your basic salary, allowances such as HRA and special allowance, any variable pay, and the employer's contributions to provident fund and often gratuity. Those employer contributions are part of the cost but do not appear in your monthly salary.
From CTC to take-home
Take-home is the gross salary minus your own PF contribution, professional tax and income tax. Because income tax depends on your regime and deductions, use the income tax calculator for a more exact figure.
Formula
Basic = CTC × basic % · HRA = Basic × HRA %
Special allowance = CTC − basic − HRA − employer PF − gratuity − variable
Take-home = Gross − employee PF − professional tax − income tax
Where:
- CTC
- = Cost to company, per year
- Gross salary
- = Basic + HRA + special allowance + variable pay
- PF
- = Provident fund at 12% of basic

Frequently asked questions
What is CTC?
Cost to company: the total annual amount an employer spends on an employee, including salary, employer PF, gratuity and other benefits.
Why is my take-home much lower than CTC ÷ 12?
Employer PF, gratuity, your own PF, professional tax and income tax are all deducted or not paid in hand.
How is special allowance decided?
It is the balance of the CTC after the fixed components, so it changes when the other parts change.
